Isaac stories have sadly always been few and far between. He was a bit more popular of a subject in the early days, since he was old enough for more serious romance plots, and that’s where Coming of Age comes in.
Even though Isaac is actually of age, Jamie chooses to go with an “older woman” sort of plot. It doesn’t provide as much drama as it would if sweet little sixteen year old Taylor were the one dating a twenty eight year old woman with a daughter as old as some of his sisters, but it still provides the main basis for drama in this story. That’s a little unrealistic to me, but Jamie’s portrayal of her older characters is not, leading me to believe that Jamie was one of those rare adult authors in the early days.
There is more drama in the story, though it only comes in near the end with just enough foreshadowing for me to guess it. That’s not necessarily a bad thing; it sets the tone nicely for a sequel with even more drama. Jamie is a fairly mature, polished author, and other than the low key drama, I can’t find much fault with Coming of Age. Her chapters can be on the short side, though, so the total length isn’t quite as daunting as it seems. Likewise, her tendency to intersperse the text with photos of Isaac and cheesy, 1990s clipart belies her obvious maturity. Still, those things don’t mar what is overall a nice, if not terribly exciting, story for its time, and the sequel is sure to be even better.
