If I’ve said it once, I’ve said it a million times; there’s no faster way to turn me off your fic than to format it poorly. Even my wonderful Readability plugin could do little for Imprisoned, which is a shame, since the writing isn’t nearly as bad as the improperly formatted paragraphs would suggest.
The writing style is conversational, if a little bit immature for Zac at the age of nineteen. That childlike persona sort of fits the story and the sudden life changes Zac is thrust into, though. I’m not particularly surprised to find out that was just a ploy by Kate to keep him in her life, but I do feel like there are a dozen or so other clues and strange hints planted in the story that I can’t make sense of just yet.
The plot, however, remains quite juvenile. Cassandra moves quickly from what seems to be a generic romance plot into something resembling suspense, but she only throws around terminology from crime shows without seeing to have any real understanding of the process. It’s hard to be emotionally invested in a plot that just isn’t realistic or plausible.
While Cassandra’s writing is, at times, not too bad, I still can’t quite get over all the impossibilities in the plot. It all ends abruptly and unrealistically, with lots of loose ends left. Some of the hints I thought I’d picked up on in the beginning turn out to be nothing at all, or have mundane but inexplicable explanations. I can applaud Cassandra for trying to weave lots of different elements into Imprisoned, but none of them really add up to much.
