After all the confusion of Faded, I was at least pleased to see that Kokai had slightly longer chapters. The first of these explains how Taylor and Scott parted ways and Taylor ended up in college with a roommate named David. With the way Lijah has manipulated her character’s names, I can’t help wondering just who this David is…
The first short chapter from David’s point of view doesn’t answer any questions, but seems to hint that Taylor is trying to hide his identity. The dyed black and blue hair and the piercings only add to that, and check a big cliche of the list of early twentieth century hanfic cliches. It was one of my favorites back then, but now I can definitely see how cheesy it was to make one of the guys look more “edgy.”
Much like Faded, most of the chapters of Kokai pass by with little to nothing happening in them. Hints that I don’t quite understand are dropped until finally… well, most of the hints never amount to anything, actually. At least by the end, in very abrupt fashion, Taylor and Scott do admit they’re in love. Still, that doesn’t make up for the messy plotting or the even messier writing that plagues both Faded and Kokai.
