As an author myself, there are two things I can really admire in other authors — the ability to write a lot and the ability to write well with others. Heather was a particularly prolific author, particularly with her frequent co-author, Kristy, so you can imagine that I already admire her a lot even though I’ve read few of her stories.
Fallen Down Angels was part of that golden age of chick lit that seemed to happen around the release of Underneath, so I’m not surprised to see the first chapter is full of descriptions of the beautiful women in Taylor and Zac’s lives. With so many characters to introduce, I don’t mind the exposition, but I can’t help rolling my eyes a little at the attention devoted to describing hair and clothes.
Another thing I’m not so fond of in chick lit is that one character — you know the one — who is just a bitch. Usually they’re off to the side, only popping up to cause drama, but in this particular story, we get to spend some time in her head. Delaney is just as vapid and conniving inside as she appears, so even seeing things from her point of view does little at all to redeem her.
I’m also not a big fan of how Heather and Kristy describe Hanson fans, even if it is through Delaney’s eyes. The fact that Delaney herself is a fan, at least of Taylor, is an interesting twist, and I would have enjoyed seeing even more of her meddling with the fan gossip. Fallen Down Angels really isn’t a long story, and the climax is, well, sort of anticlimactic. It all ends pretty suddenly, leaving me unsure what to expect from a sequel. Still, the writing is mostly solid aside from a few grammatical mistakes, even if the plotting feels a little lacking at times.
