Status Unfinished
After how confusing and frustrating Love Me was, I really couldn’t muster up much interest in the sequel. Knowing that it’s unfinished, I doubt that anything — even that cliffhanger — will be resolved in just twelve chapters.
The first chapter does, at least catch me up rather nicely with what I’ve missed in the three months since the last story ended. I’m not sure I like the idea of switching from third person to first with this story, but I will say that I think first person suits Presley’s writing style better. Somehow, her writing just seems to have improved in general with Mixtape Poetry, although there’s still more room to grow.
Of course, she never quite gets there since she never finished the story. A lot of threads are left hanging, although at least one major issue was resolved in one of the last chapters to be posted. That saves me from having an entirely sour taste in my mouth, but overall, this is not a series of stories I was incredibly impressed by. I love the way Presley wove music into the stories — something that was clearly on her mind when she named the second one Mixtape Poetry — but it isn’t quite enough to make me really like them. From the over the top drama to the sloppy writing, there just wasn’t enough good in there to salvage what was obviously a well planned story.
