Status Unfinished (third in a trilogy)
I haven’t been particularly impressed by the other two stories in this trilogy, so I’m not going into Hanging By A Moment expecting any miracles. It has the added flaw of being unfinished, so I know that no matter how good it might be, the lack of a true ending will leave a bad taste in my mouth.
Don’t Look Back In Anger ended on something of a cliffhanger, right after a huge accident. This story begins three months later, which feels a little awkward to me, but I suppose it was the best way to get the ball rolling again and skip over parts of the story that might have been boring. The first chapter begins with a flashback, though, that manages to only feel a little bit awkward and gets most of the exposition out of the way.
The difficult thing about writing a series of stories is that you have to find a way to differentiate each story. Bethany doesn’t do a great job of this with these three stories. The three couples just go in endless circles, rearranging themselves into different love triangles and rehashing the same issues over and over. The first two stories have the additional plots of a stalker and a drinking problem, but Hanging By A Moment seems to be all romance. There may have been another plot planned, but Bethany discontinued the story before it could be fleshed out.
And that’s it. It’s pretty disappointing to end on a huge cliffhanger, but that’s all she wrote. Literally. Like I said, an unfinished story always leaves a bad taste in your mouth. I will say, however, that this story was more enjoyable than the other two; there were some hilarious moments to it and some depth to the characters that I hadn’t seen yet. If it had been finished, it might have been a pretty good story.
