There were so many massively popular authors back in the day, but only a handful have made it to classic status today. Alana was certainly popular back in the day, although she didn’t quite stand the test of time for whatever reason. I picked Frozen completely randomly from her list of fics, and I’m curious to see if I can figure out just why she hasn’t retained popularity over the years.
While there’s a good chance Frozen was the first story to use the ‘stuck in a cabin’ plot, it’s still one that makes me roll my eyes. The three girls–one for each Hanson, naturally–aren’t remotely pleasant or sympathetic characters, although their personalities are at least fairly distinctive so that I can tell which is which. Unfortunately, I can’t really say the same for the three brothers personalities.
As you might have guessed from that description of the plot, I don’t think Alana has put a lot of thought into her story. The medical details as well as the fact that there are somehow six teenagers stuck in a cabin with no adults around or even mentioned… it’s all a bit ridiculous and unbelievable. At least Alana did try to write a little more interesting drama, with a bit of an attempt at foreshadowing, but Frozen suffers majorly for those unrealistic details and constant spelling and grammar mistakes. This story might have worked for less than discerning readers back in the day, but it’s really no surprise that it hasn’t held up over the years after all.
