I’ll be honest–I hadn’t even realized Pega wrote anything other than her well known Devil Angel lost chapter that focused on Isaac. Not surprisingly, as she seems to be the consummate Ike fan, My Brother’s Keeper is also focused on the eldest brother, which is sadly a rather novel change from most of the hanfic world.
Pega’s chapters are quite short, and by the end of the first book things have already gotten quite hot and heavy. It isn’t a terribly deep plot, at least to begin with. There are hints of darkness in Kelsey’s past, hints that are more annoying than intriguing. I find the actual plot–Ike cleaning up Taylor’s mess–far more interesting than whatever happened in Kelsey’s past.
The chapters gradually become a little longer, and the plot more involved. There are times when I feel Pega could have gone even deeper, but I do love the characters she has created, including supporting ones like her understanding, but sarcastic, Zac. Likewise, she could have done a bit more with Kelsey’s past, which does get revealed almost randomly near the end of the story. Still, My Brother’s Keeper is an interesting, if overly brief, read that takes a few unexpected turns that make it feel longer than it actually is.
