This story was a little confusing to me to begin with. As far as I can tell, the rewrite was never finished for it or the sequels, or… something. I’m not really sure. I chose to read the original version, just because I knew it was complete, even though the existence of a rewrite didn’t give me much hope for the original.
The story dives right in with only a little introduction to the characters. The first chapter feels like it’s missing a lot — and that’s only partially because of how short it is! These really feel more like incomplete scenes than complete chapters, and it doesn’t help at all that each one is told from a different character’s point of view. Reading this story could very well cause whiplash.
Despite the short chapters, I can definitely see shades of Kerry here; I did read her newer trilogy, after all. The characters are over dramatic in her usual way — a way that I can’t help calling feminine, despite not liking to apply genders to personality traits. The constant crying or puking at the first sign of any emotion is just too much for me, though.
Even though the chapter number is daunting, this really isn’t a very long read, and that’s a plus. There are some cute and touching moments, and there’s really nothing horribly wrong with it, but the execution — short chapters, over the top characters, unpolished writing — leaves a lot to be desired. Perhaps the rewrite would have been a better read.
