Three Days

by Katie (link)

Genre het, romance
Pairings Isaac/OFC
Length 14 chapters
Status Completed (with sequel)

Three Days isn’t a particularly long story, but I’m intrigued by the structure. Katie set out to create a self-contained, quick tale of love at first sight, and that’s exactly what she did.

The chapters are rather short, since each one captures only a small piece of time in Isaac and Gwen’s weekend together. It’s a stylistic choice, but not one I’m overly fond of. It doesn’t help that Katie tends toward short sentences that don’t feel any more substantial or less choppy even when they are stuffed full of multisyllabic words. Mostly, it just feels like Katie is trying a bit too hard, from the writing to the female character who is a literature lover and seems to bear quite a bit of resemblance to the author.

And what about that love at first sight thing? If you’re into it, you’re into it. If you’re not–like me–you’ll find it hard to swallow how quickly Ike and Gwen go from strangers to peppering their speech with “honey” and acting like they’ve been dating for ages. The fact that Isaac’s family so quickly accepts Gwen and his love for her is pretty unrealistic, too. If you like cheese and want to believe this sort of thing can happen, consider yourself far less cynical than me… and consider Three Days the story for you.
