This is a story that has been recommended quite a bit over the years, and for good reason. Not entirely a romance, and heavy on the action, Deep Blue Heart is a story that is hard to define but easy to enjoy.
I’ll admit that the story’s opening–Taylor rescuing the sole survivor of a horrific plane crash–is a little unrealistic. Given that and Barbara’s occasionally confusing and sloppy writing, it took me a few chapters to see what the fuss was all about. Although it still strains credulity a bit, the plot is complex enough to keep me guessing and never quite coming up with the right answer. Done right, as Barbara has, that sort of suspense keeps readers turning the page (figuratively speaking).
You’ll often hear me complain about authors who throw in new narrators at random. While Deep Blue Heart does bring in quite a few perspectives by the end, Barbara’s third person narrating that verges on omniscient while focusing on Taylor and Justice works perfectly. The mystery centers mostly around the original characters, which I’m not overly fond of, but Taylor’s issues and his relationship with his brothers figure into the plot as well.
With long, meaty chapters that make the story feel even longer than its chapter count would suggest, there’s a lot to digest in Deep Blue Heart, and it’s a satisfying, heart pounding read that will keep you guessing until the end.
