Genre het, romance, comedy
Pairings Isaac/OFC, Taylor/Natalie
Length 25 chapters
Status Completed (second in a series)
The title of this story made me worry that it would only be full of needless drama, the way so many sequels to romance stories are. I also hoped for more on Zac’s love life, so the fact that it started out centered on Isaac and Hannah was a little disappointing.
Those point of view switches are a little too abrupt for my tastes, and only serve to highlight the fact that, while her writing is strong, Shawna doesn’t quite manage to differentiate between the narrators’ voices. I would have preferred if A Different Kind of Dream had been like Dreamgirl, and only switched point of view by chapter, not by scene.
Unfortunately, A Different Kind of Dream suffers from all the problems that plagued Dreamgirl, and many of them are even worse. A few choice opinions about Hanson and their fans crop up in the narrative, and the story is almost completely drama free, since it focuses entirely on Hannah’s pregnancy. The one plot thread I was hoping would crop up again–the flirtation and potential relationship between Zac and Lexie–doesn’t. I assume it’s the focus on the third story in the series, but that one barely got off the ground. This is, once again, a case of a sequel not adding very much at all to a story.
