I know I said that the story this is a sequel to had a weird title, but I realize now that the titles actually make sense. Who and what things actually are isn’t always what they seem in these stories, and the first story blended past and present really interestingly, with a big twist at the end. I can only hope Am, Is, Are, Was, Were is just as unique and doesn’t veer into typical romance territory.
The story begins a whopping fifteen years in the future, so you can imagine that a lot has changed. No one is who or what they were at the end of the first story after so much time. Some of the changes are predictable and typical, but others are a little more interesting. At least Ashley retains her “liberated woman” personality in this story, and stubbornly refuses to be the other woman; in spite of all the other changes, she still feels like the same character.
Of course, it wouldn’t be much of a story if Ashley resisted Taylor forever. Another wedding–this time Isaac’s–is a bit of a turning point, and provides a nice connection back to the first story. The ending feels a bit rushed, though, which is a shame. It all falls together just a bit too easily, even if it is the ending I was hoping for. Still, this is a strong sequel, with much better writing, if not better plotting, than the first.
