I’m rarely struck right away by the strength of someone’s writing, but that’s exactly what happened just a few paragraphs into My Shining Star. Okay, so it isn’t the best writing in the world, and Sunshine does tend to overwrite a bit, and her grammar isn’t always the best, but she gets it right just as often as she makes me roll my eyes. Her Zac has a unique voice that I’m really looking forward to seeing more of.
The plot, unfortunately, isn’t so strong. Zac and Adrienne’s relationship begins right away, with little more than his exposition in the first chapter to explain their history. From there, the story takes a turn into angsty territory, with Adrienne experiencing some family tragedy, but it subsides quickly. There are moments that have potential for real, interesting drama, but it always seems to be resolved very quickly.
Closer to the end–or, at least, where the story stops–there is some real drama, but it’s all a bit ridiculous and hard for me to take seriously. The story would be greatly improved by some editing to tidy up Sunshine’s sloppy writing, but the plot (or lack thereof) still might not stand up to close scrutiny.
