I’ve expressed my misgivings about Mibba stories before, and Lost Without Each Other is poised to be no exception, given that its summary sounds Mary Sue-tastic. Maybe Carli and Lorrie can take the less than stellar premise and turn it into something special, though. Summaries aren’t everything, after all.
Unfortunately, the story lives up to its summary, complete with a perfect female character who even the wives–who are referred to constantly as “the wives” and are practically a hivemind–love at first sight. Of course she gets the job working for Hanson, because there wouldn’t be a story if she didn’t. And of course, Taylor falls for her, after the troubles in his marriage are barely touched upon before coming to a ridiculous head.
In spite of Carli and Lorrie’s attempts, Lost Without Each Other is pretty light on substance. They might have a few good ideas, but the chapters are so short, the narrators too indistinguishable and the entire thing too shallow for me to really care about any of those ideas. The writing itself isn’t horrible, in spite of a few tense shifts and awkward authorial intrusions, but even that doesn’t make up for the rest of the story’s problems. If you’re looking for a Mary Sue tale, Lost Without Each Other certainly fits the bill, but there are still better–and complete–ones out there.
