I had absolutely no clue what to expect from this story when I chose it to read, but I have to say, the first chapter does everything a first chapter should do. The opening paragraph is strange and humorous, the setting is established naturally, and a little mystery is revealed at the end. It might end up being the typical drama from here, but A Cry In The Dark starts strong.
It doesn’t stay quite so strong, though. Hattie’s writing gets a bit sloppy at times, and the plot quickly descends into cliche. The Hanson family is all too willing to take in the homeless teen mother Taylor found on the street and her story is, as you might have guessed, plenty cheesy. Still, that little bit of mystery persists and that’s the one thing that keeps me interested.
That mystery never quite gets solved, though, and I’m not sure if it’s meant to be or if we’re always meant to wonder who the father of Genesis’ baby really is. I expected that to be the focus, and so I’m a bit disappointed by the crazy direction that A Cry In The Dark takes around the halfway point. Hattie covers a lot of ground with this story, in spite of the short chapters and quick pace, but it’s not all ground that I’m crazy about.
