The Gifted Ones is well known for hosting some classic fics, but for whatever reason, I hadn’t previously bothered to check out some of the newer fics hosted there. If Time Goes On is anything like the older fics Keiko hosts, it’ll be a good one.
Time Goes On begins, as so many stories do, with a prologue that raises more questions than it answers. The first person narrator, whoever she is, has decided it’s finally time to tell the story of… well, it’s a Hanson. I have to keep reading to find out which one. Because it’s framed as a story being told to someone or written down for posterity, the prologue isn’t as annoying as it could be.
The chapters are lengthy, filled with a little too much detail and feel like they drag a bit. But Chelle has a lot of ground to cover here, from the beginning of Melissa’s relationship with Zac… until the end. That might not be such a problem if the chapters were formatted a little better. The lack of paragraph breaks makes my head spin a bit, and the frantic pace of the long chapters makes it hard for all of the drama the story contains to have the intended effect.
Stories that portray one of the brothers as abusive are always hard to swallow. Chelle’s pacing and sloppy writing makes Time Goes On even harder to swallow, but there are moments that really work and a few twists and turns to the story that actually take me by surprise. Even though I knew from the beginning that Zac was going to die, the ending still made me tear up a little.
