All I Want begins right in the middle of the action, which is generally a good way to begin, but it does take me a while to catch up. Thankfully, Jess provides enough exposition a bit later on for me to grasp the plot, a common one in chicklit–both Taylor and his female best friend are in love with each other, but neither is brave enough to admit it.
It continues down that well trodden path for the next several chapters. The two have a drunken encounter and rationalize it the best they can, deciding to get into a friends with benefits relationship that is nowhere near as simple as they make it sound.
Jess does have a way with words and she’s created two interesting characters that only occasionally devolve into stereotypes. The fact that the entire plot is about miscommunication just makes me roll my eyes, though. A little bit of that is okay, especially if one character’s motivations remain unclear to the reader so that they big reveal can be really satisfying. Unfortunately, Jess stopped writing All I Want before their could be any sort of reveal, and so I’m just left frustrated with Taylor and Lily and their inability to express their feelings.
