A popular trope in stories, one I’ve read what feels like a million times, is the story of best friends who secretly want to be more. From the beginning, although Renee sprinkles in just enough exposition to get the story moving, it’s clear that Spin is going to be another one of those stories. I can only hope it has something unique going for it to liven up a trope that’s been beaten to death (by authors including yours truly).
Unfortunately, the plot progresses largely because of convenient conversations, rather than much actual action, and it takes Renee a while to get the balance of action and exposition as right as she did in the first chapter. I do appreciate the inclusion of a sideplot for Taylor involving his struggles to find love, although the little bit of a plot for Isaac just feels tacked to so he isn’t left out.
What little drama there is in Spin doesn’t last long or have much of a real impact, and at least one event is just eye rollingly typical when it comes to sources of drama in romance novels. With such a short story, there isn’t room or time for a lot to happen, and overall the story just feels very light. While the writing is fairly strong at times, there’s just not a lot in Spin to capture my attention or set it apart from dozens of other “best friends” fics.
