The introduction to Keep It As Snow talks about the ideas and themes behind the story and its predecessor. I wasn’t all that impressed by the first one; Lorraine’s apparently grand ideas seemed to fall a bit flat. I hope in this sequel, unfinished as it is, they don’t.

Like many older stories, this one is oddly prescient in the inclusion of a record label run by our boys, although Lorraine had them start it just a bit younger than they actually did. The story is set two years down the line from the original, and at least two of the brothers seem to have matured and resemble their real selves a bit more.

Of course, coincidence brings them back into contact with girls from the first story. The plot is a bit thin in that way, but the writing is just as strong as in the first so that it holds the plot together. Lorraine sets a big portion of the story in England, which only does a little to make her Britishisms less jarring. To start, Keep It As Snow seems to tread familiar teen angst ground, but halfway through, Zac’s story takes a turn that I didn’t anticipate–but that I definitely enjoy. Even though the story wasn’t finished, there is a decent resolution in the “last” chapter, and I found myself crying a bit at the catharsis of it. This is most definitely an improvement over the first story.
