There aren’t many hanfics written from the perspective of one of the boys’ children, probably because it’s tough to write a story like that and still keep it interesting. Since The End of Forever deals with the death of a Hanson–namely, Taylor–it has even more obstacles to overcome, but Chelsi’s writing is strong enough to carry a story that might not be to everyone’s tastes.
The lengthy first chapter has a lot of exposition, but it also gets the story rolling–by the end, Penny has made the decision to come home and be with her father during his last few weeks. Her reasons for leaving are left a little vague, but it’s clear that there’s not a ton of angst behind it; she wanted to pursue her dreams of a life in Los Angeles in spite of having a fairly perfect life back in Tulsa with her family.
While obviously a story about Taylor dying isn’t going to be all smiles, I think the best word for The End of Forever is bittersweet. Of course we all know from the beginning how it’s going to end, but the story is about Penny coming to terms with that ending. I wouldn’t mind seeing even more of the relationships between the siblings and even their cousins, but this isn’t a story that needs to be lengthy. With just six beautifully written chapters, Chelsi says everything that needs to be said.
