What to say about In The Dark? Well it’s a Zac story and I’m a sucker for those and it’s by Bethany and I love her stories and characters so of course I had to read it.
Going into the story I knew some of the basic plot points as Bethany had told me before hand and I love the aspect of Zac falling for the help in a way and I also love the tour setting even though I find writing the tour setting hard for myself I love reading it so it was nice to see some chapters set during the tour.
Colby who was the main OFC was for the most part around my age range during most of the story and while I liked her I didn’t really love her which was shocking since I love most of Bethany’s OFC’s. Colby just sometimes acted irrationally or like a child but maybe partly some of that was due to her parents death and then being coddled by the people who helped raise her afterwards.
I also wasn’t much of a fan of this Zac but I do feel like I liked him better than others. I knew from the start he’d have a drinking issue and while I feel most of his nastiness was due to that I also think at times he willingly took advantage and manipulated Colby even when sober which maybe means I shouldn’t have rooted for them but I did(even though I crackshiped Colby/Avery).
The story as a whole though was good it’s just the character’s decisions and actions I didn’t much agree with but in the end I think by the end Zac and Colby fixed their issues, Colby grew some and Zac got sober so that makes their chances at lasting as a couple a bit better. Though I think I am severely disappointed that Colby choose not to be a singer or be in the spotlight since it seems like that was where she was headed from the start. It just seemed once she got involved with Zac and they had their issues she lost a part of her dreams and passions and by the end she was okay with being dependent on Zac and I guess I just like when Bethany writes her females as having more independence than what Colby wanted. I sort also feel like her reasons for not being in the spotlight were kind of silly and a part of me hopes that even with the story ended that Colby eventually realizes that herself.
I must add the last few chapters also made me wish we had more daddy Zac moments in this(a woman has her weaknesses) and also I wish Avery had more scenes towards the end like she had at the beginning(again a woman has her weaknesses and like I stated I have a crackship).
All in all if I was grading this story I’d give it a B or a 8 out of 10 so I’d still highly recommend it to people who want to read a Zac fic.
