Avenues is the first part of a trilogy by Diamond. The boys are coming home from a tour and not all is right with them as we come to find out. Taylor is unhappy in his marriage, as is Zac. Taylor’s unhappiness stems from his unrequited feelings for Zac that he’s had for years. Zac’s unhappy because of issues with Kate, and these dreams he’s having about an, at least at first, unnamed guy. We come to find out the guy is Taylor. Through the story there is a back and forth with whether Taylor and Zac are going to be together or not. It’s a one step forward and then one step back process. Zac is very torn about everything that is happening. Eventually there is a fight after something is revealed, but it ends on a satisfying note. It’s a good setup for the second story.
I really like this story. There is a lot of drama and angst, and while I don’t like Zaylor stories that are so immersed in it, it works well here. You can really feel the anguish from Taylor and Zac’s perspectives. The smutty scenes are done very well. I also like their friend Wes’s character. He’s a sort of comic relief and that’s a good thing to have in story that holds this much drama and angst.
