I’ve got to commend Becca–I don’t claim my older hanfics at all. We’ve all matured a lot since then, and so have the stories that we write. The one (or more) girls for every guy trend in hanfic is one that didn’t age well, and it’s one that Neskowin revolves around.
Unfortunately, there are more than three girls in this story and it’s nearly impossible to tell them apart. With little description or exposition, I’ve read several chapters before even realizing that one of them is a Hanson fan and another is dating Isaac. There’s just too much to keep up with here and not enough made clear. The story consists mostly of dialogue that doesn’t advance the plot or fill in any of those confusing gaps.
But there is definitely a lot of plot happening in Neskowin. I expected the story to be centered largely around the vacation to the titular spot, but instead we have marriages, elopements, pregnancies, miscarriages and serious, life threatening accidents. It’s all just way, way too much, especially considering how short and choppy the scenes are. That, and the lack of exposition, makes it hard to follow the story or get attached to it at all. Becca obviously had big plans for Neskowin, but I think she just wasn’t a mature enough author to pull it off at the time.
