I’ll admit, the summary for Broken didn’t impress me very much. It doesn’t come anywhere close to describing everything that takes place in thirty chapters that feel packed with much more action than such a relatively short story possibly could be.

The story begins with a brief summary of everything Amelia has been through at the hands of her stepdad; while it’s a bit of a boring beginning, the summary is better than slogging through that much angst and pain. Likewise, some other important scenes seem to be glossed over a bit, but it keeps the plot moving at a reasonable pace, so I can’t complain too much.

I guess I’m just a sucker for stories about relationships that never quite find the right timing. Relationships that aren’t quite toxic, but they never quite work. Taylor and Amelia have that in spades, and Amy handles it well, with Amelia only sometimes seeming to wallow too much–even though, after all she’s been through, more than a little wallowing would be understandable.

Broken is definitely worth a try, no matter what the summary leads you to expect. Some scenes are a bit short and quick, and could use more description, but overall, Amy’s writing is strong enough to carry such a heavy plot. She also doesn’t shy away from leaving an open ending that has me dying to read the next story and whether or not Taylor and Amelia finally end up together.
