After reading the first part of this trilogy, I’ve decided that I have a serious love/hate relationship with Krystal’s writing. The hate only comes in because I can guarantee that whatever she dreams up to put her characters through will always be worse than anything I’ve tried to anticipate. Yet, I’m still there, hanging on every word. It only takes three chapters for Once More With Feeling to break my heart. That might be a record.
Just as I suspected, the vampire politics begin to play a much bigger role in this story. Despite Taylor trying to cut his family out of his new life, however, they also have a story to tell in Once Upon A Feeling. I’m glad; as I said, I think one of the strongest parts of Krystal’s writing is the family relationships that she creates.
If I have any problems at all with this story, it’s how difficult some of the characters are to relate to. Obviously, I’m not supposed to like some of the vampire characters; they all exist in a pretty gray moral area. But I did at least like Taylor in Just Another Victim. Now, though, his human nature is occasionally replaced by something pretty scary, a result of his second death. When he’s so unpredictable, it’s harder to feel for him or understand what’s going on in his mind.
Of course, I do have one more complaint, though it isn’t really with this story. The third part of the trilogy appears to be not only unfinished, but unavailable online. So my final complaint? I want more!
