When I first discovered Holly’s plan for As We Know It, I was really excited. I don’t know how many other fans of both Hanson and the novel Good Omens are out there, but I think this fic is good enough that you don’t really need to be familiar with the novel to enjoy it.
It isn’t entirely accurate to call this a crossover story–no characters from Good Omens appear in it. What’s similar is the basic plot–the end of the world–and the writing style. Holly does an amazing job of imitating Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s hilarious style and adapting it to suit those boys we know and love. Her interpretation of them might be a little off in some places, but it hits more good notes than bad. You can’t go wrong with writing Taylor as possibly gay, Zac hating everything and Isaac as third (or fifth?) wheel.
Although there are a few bits of this story that could use some editing and some rather short chapters, it’s a fun, quick read. Don’t expect anything too deep here, aside from the rather charming brotherly relationships. Where this story really exceeds, as I already said, is in imitating the subtle, quirky humor of the novel that inspired it. For a good laugh, you really can’t do much better than As We Know It.
