Amazed

by Serene (link)

Genre het, drama, romance
Pairings Taylor/OFC
Length 10 letters
Status Completed

Amazed is written in epistolary format, and that makes me nervous, perhaps because other epistolary fics I’ve read have ended with big surprises. I suspect Serene’s fic will do much the same, given that it’s filled with confusing changes from “canon” as we knew it in 2000 and these go unexplained for much of the story.

For reasons unexplained in the beginning, Lissa and Taylor–better known in this fic as Jordan–have broken up and she is now hoping to reconcile through a series of letters that recount bits and pieces of their relationship. Some of these are very small bits–chapter seven remains incomplete with only the author’s apology for an ending.

I was hoping for more of an explanation as to why Taylor is referred to as Jordan (a trend I’m not overly fond of) and the circumstances of his apparent solo career. Unfortunately, Serene offered none of these and barely even offered an explanation for why Lissa ended the relationship so abruptly. In spite of that, the two of them do reconcile in a fairly anti-climatic ending with none of the surprises I was hoping for.

Although Serene’s writing is beautiful, there’s just not enough exposition here for the story to fully work for me. If you don’t mind light plot as long as the writing is beautiful–something I think was very, very common in this era–you’ll enjoy Amazed even more than I did.
