Much like Sarah’s first story, Life After Love features some unique and some cliche ideas that all add up to a decent piece of chicklit that only needs some editing to be all that it can be.
The basic plot seems simple enough–Taylor needs a nanny and Callie needs a new job. Luckily, her friend Ron is there to help, although I didn’t pick up on the very, very subtle hints about just why he wants to help her out. Sarah never quite gets the foreshadowing right, either including none at all about Natalie’s death or knocking you over the head with the true explanation.
Likewise, Sarah handles the paternity issue in a way I’m not crazy about, choosing to make it an even bigger secret than it needs to be. There’s just a little too much plot to juggle here, even more than a sixty-some chapter story really needs, and some of it comes out muddled. Although the plotting isn’t all that strong, the story is grammatically superior Sarah’s previous effort, even if the changing narrator and point of view grate on my nerves. With a little better pacing, Life After Love would show Sarah’s growth as a writer even more.
