With a title like Something To Talk About, a reader is inevitably going to go into a story with a lot of expectations. For me–a big fan of the titular song–those expectations include lots of secretive pining and salacious subterfuge. Luckily, Jenn does not disappoint, even if her plot doesn’t exactly follow the song’s theme.
Instead, the plot centers around the female character, Tia, meeting her friends’ younger brother… Zac… and almost immediately falling for him. I think most of us can relate to that, hmm? The primary conflict comes from their age difference and Tia’s family’s obsession with her love life. Zac gets a little drama, in the form of his ex-girlfriend and an ongoing conflict with his parents, as well. I appreciate that none of this drama is over the top, but Jenn still could have done a little more with some of it.
Unfortunately, Something To Talk About is unfinished, so not all of those subplots are resolved. We don’t even get to see the prom that set Zac and Tia’s relationship into motion thanks to her generous offer to be his date. What does exist, though, is a nice piece of chick lit that’s mostly well written, aside from a few tense and point of view shifts. It’s nothing deep or earth shattering, but more than competent for the era in which it was written. Sometimes, a sweet little love story is all you need, and even without a proper ending, Something To Talk About delivers.
