Pretty Much Forever is a story I’ve seen recommend multiple times, although it’s short, unfinished length made me hesitant to give it a try. From the first few sentences of the prologue, though, I’m hooked. There are hints of a cliche plot — best friends from birth — but Jane’s beautiful writing and the few clues she plants of the actual plot more than make up for that.
The first few chapters detail the two families’ histories, establishing an omniscient point of view with a slight humor that I think works really well. That sort of thing, hopping from one character’s head to another, can be difficult to pull off, but Jane definitely succeeds. The voice changes ever so subtly which each different character, and seamlessly tells the story of how Naomi and Taylor became the people they are in the prologue.
Unfortunately, the story never quite gets there. At some point, Jane stopped writing it. It paints a very poignant picture, though, of the boys rise to fame — one that is even more beautiful and bittersweet to read now than it would have been back when this story was new. I certainly wish it were finished, but there’s hardly anything missing from the little vignette it ends up being in the absense of a real ending.
