When I first saw that Madden was writing a wedding themed sequel to her blockbuster hit Ten Years And Muses, I was sure it would be short and sweet. How much can you say about a wedding, after all? As it turns out, quite a lot–especially if said wedding nearly doesn’t happen.
Simply put, Taylor and Mel are dysfunctional. Yet somehow, they work. That sort of explosive chemistry is rare–rare in real life and rare to nail in fiction. I’ll admit, they weren’t the big draw for me in the original story, but they definitely grew on me in this sequel. I’m still a little sad that Zac and Drew couldn’t end up together, and while I understand Madden’s reasons for Drew’s part in this story, it’s still a little upsetting. Still, Zac and Kate have a sweet little relationship and I enjoy both Kate and Nikki’s presence in this fic.
For those of you who weren’t sold on Taylor and Mel and preferred Jason, never fear! Madden has written a “what if” ending that borrows some events from the other ending, but veers off in a very different direction. It is odd to see how domesticated Mel became with Taylor, but I’m not sure that I like the “Hollywood” Mel either. For me, I think the winner is Taylor.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again–if you’re looking for fun, sexy chick lit, look no further. Throw in a few cute references to the fandom and endings sure to satisfy everyone, and you’ve got a sequel that more than lives up to the original.
