I had surprisingly high hopes for this story, considering the many frustrations I had with Bloom. It’s no surprise, I suppose, that Off the Ledge didn’t quite live up to those expectations.
Jasper’s writing seems a bit neater and cleaner here, although still rife with Australianisms that temporarily throw me out of the story. While the original characters still seem to be the most important ones, I do find the idea of seeing things through the non-famous siblings’ eyes new and interesting. Even Zac and Taylor are largely out of the spotlight here. Although I’ve never toured myself, Jasper’s portrayal of it is believable enough for me.
Unfortunately, my wishes of seeing Kirby and Zac’s relationship be fully realized don’t come true. Instead, the romance plot centers around Taylor, Kirby and a brand new male character who leaves me feeling totally flat. Still, those little flickers of jealousy and awkwardness remain between her and Zac, and I can’t help thinking Jasper planted those seeds on purpose. Since Off the Ledge was never finished, I can’t know for sure, but I’m certainly going to imagine it ended with a happily ever after for Zac and Kirby.
