Given the science fiction-y premise of Diosa’s better known story, I shouldn’t really have been surprised that Hair Like Fire involves time travel and an inventive version of early Native American society. That’s certainly a summary you won’t see often in hanfic, but if anyone could come close to pulling it off, it’s Diosa.

While I’m not sure that Diosa has really done enough research to create a believable prehistoric society, she writes it with a confidence that makes it easy–for the most part–to disregard that skepticism. The attitude toward women displayed by this society is difficult to swallow, but that’s by design. One character in particular even manages to surprise me with his transformation, even if it isn’t quite complete.

Unfortunately, the story is left unfinished and ends on a serious cliffhanger, with the clan’s leader in mortal danger. Again, not phrases you often get to use in reference to a hanfic. But if you can allow yourself to be submerged into the world Diosa has created, you’ll be just as affected by the characters’ dramas as I am. There are hints of two historical fiction series I love, Outlander and the Spanish Bit Saga, in Hair Like Fire, that ultimately make it a stronger read for me than the story Diosa is perhaps more famous for writing.
