I’m truly not a very big mpreg fan, so it’s a good thing that genre doesn’t crop up more often in hanfic. When it does, I hope to see a decent explanation for just how men can get pregnant. I don’t get that in Having My Baby; instead, Elizabeth just sort of handwaves the science fiction possibilities and focuses on the fluffy romance.
And there is plenty of fluffy romance here, although there’s more than a little drama as well. Elizabeth shows some opposition to Zac and Harry’s relationship, based on the homophobia that hasn’t gone away since gay marriage was legalized in the US but also based on their age difference and Zac’s history. That makes it a little more believable, and it’s interesting to see the opposing characters evolve–or not–in their feelings about Zac and Harry. There are also more than a few changing relationships here, with a few big surprises.
It’s a lot to keep up with, considering that the relationships have already been rearranged quite a bit from what they are in real life. All the drama and smut take more of a center stage than the mpreg thing, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. Awkward, painful details of pregnancy and birth are mostly glossed over, and you won’t see me complaining about that. Elizabeth packs a lot of action and drama into just fourteen chapters, and it’s enough that I think Having My Baby could win over slash fans who would normally shy away from mpreg.
