It might be a bit disingenuous to review this fic as one story, as it’s more of a series, but none of its parts are all that longer, and neither do they really stand apart well enough to merit their own reviews. In spite of the expanse of time and material that A Different Point of Inspiration claims to cover, it isn’t quite the epic saga that you might expect.
The summary makes this story seem like it will cover the recording process of a second album that didn’t quite exist when the fic was written, but instead it begins just before the fame. Neither does it focus all that much on the boys’ career, except where that career can be used to create drama for them. Said drama is easily resolved when each of them meets the girl of their dreams, though, yet the girls all suffer worse drama that isn’t always perfectly resolved.
Each part of this story covers a small period of time that makes up the entire story, interspersed with strange, unprofessional interludes from the “editors.” A Different Point of Inspiration purports to be the bands’ autobiography, but that illusion is shattered by the shoddy, un-edited writing, not to mention the copious Australianisms that are hardly even helped by the inclusion of Aussie significant others for two of the brothers.
It’s all just a bit of a juvenile mess, right down to the unrealistic pregnancy drama that’s all too easily resolved. Top that all off with a very un-Hansony sounding tracklist for the titular album, and NJ has created one of the least realistic portrayals of the boys’ early career that I’ve read.
