Although crossovers are becoming a bit more common in hanfic, they’re still fairly rare, and it’s even more rare that a crossover features something I’m interested in. When I saw that Sisyphus Rising took place in the world of Firefly, though, I knew it was right up my alley.
The story actually features more than one crossover, with the Leto brothers making up the crew of the Firefly Taylor ends up on after crashing five hundred years into the future. One doesn’t need to know anything about them to read the fic, nor does one really need to know anything about Joss Whedon’s fictional world, as Aeryn does a good job of blending exposition into the narrative so that anyone can keep up with what’s going on.
What’s going on is largely centered around Taylor and whether or not he will be able to return to his own time. There are a few scenes that incorporate more Firefly-esque action, but the bounty hunting and galactic intrigue are only stage setting for the real story.
In that way, I think Sisyphus Rising could appeal to anyone, even those who don’t have any interest in space opera, or indeed, any knowledge at all of the source material. As a Firefly fan, I find that Aeryn has done a great job of making that canon work for her purposes, although I would like to see a story that incorporates more than one Hanson brother, just to see how the rest of them might adjust to this world.
