Although I haven’t read many of Jesse-may’s stories, I’m a big fan of Diamond’s. Her cest stories are what she’s now best known for, but Before it Breaks is a nice, if unfinished, sample of what she has to offer in het, too.
The story began as part of a different challenge, with Jesse-may writing it solo and bringing a lot of the plot elements to the table before Diamond was involved in the project at all. Still, it’s a rather angsty, Taylor-focused story, which is classic Diamond. The fact that two of the female characters (one of whom is Taylor’s ex) are dating each other is an interesting twist that, like Taylor, I didn’t see coming.
With all of that said, it doesn’t seem like a great deal happens over the course of this story. Because of this, it’s hard to realize how much time has passed during the chapters, some of which are on the short side. Still, the characters are interesting and well-developed, and the somewhat strained relationship between Taylor and his brothers is especially interesting to read. Before it Breaks is one story where I couldn’t even begin to guess how it might have ended, which makes it all the more disappointing that it was never finished.
