If I’ve ever read a story written from Ezra’s point of view, I can’t recall. And if I had read one as unique as If Only I Could [Turn Back Time], I would certainly remember. The title, as it turns out, is quite literal–that’s right, this fic involves time travel.
Once you get past the idea of Zac as a mad scientist who could invent something of a cryogenic chamber that allows for later resurrection and Isaac’s unexplained possession of a time traveling watch, you’re on to a pretty interesting and unique plot. Ezra, a teenager at the time of the fic, is determined to find out why no one will talk about Zac’s disappearance, and through a series of serendipitous trips into Hanson’s past, he somehow manages it. His fumbles are confusing, as are his efforts to fix them, but for the most part the time travel concept works. It all, somehow, results in a happy, polyamorous ending for his parents, aunts, and uncles.
The second portion of the story might as well be its own tale entirely. The magic watch does get used once and the polyamory thing is mentioned, but those plots are resolved all too easily. I was relieved, at least, that Gabi kept Ezra’s relationship with his new boyfriend Soren fairly chaste. Ultimately, though, I don’t know that this second part adds much to a story that’s already about as unique as possible.
