Perspective begins like so many other early Hanson fanfics, and it would make me want to roll my eyes if reality didn’t play out in a surprisingly similar way. What are the chances of random fans getting lucky enough to meet and capture the eyes of the boys? Pretty high, in fact.

That’s where the similarities with reality end, though. The budding romance Lexy has with Isaac quickly ends and another plot takes over. We learn early on, when she hacks into Mercury’s website to find out where Hanson are rehearsing, that Lexy leads a double life. Kayla doesn’t seem to have a great grip on how hacking works, but neither do I, so her vague details work well enough for me but may not for all readers. The legal aspects are a little bit more iffy, but you can’t expect much from authors who were likely teenagers.

While she’s on the run, a total coincidence brings Lexy and Isaac back together. The reunion is a bit anticlimactic, especially after my suspicions about Lexy’s hacker friend are proven correct. Kayla didn’t quite telegraph his true identity, but she left just enough clues that it isn’t all that surprising. The reveal of his identity could have been handled better, though.

How it all plays out from there is a little bit of a fantasy, both in the legal aspects and in the now-resumed romance. Still, Lexy and Isaac make the reasonable decision to call things off once she’s able to return to her real life, but the open ending gives some hope that they have a future together. Although it isn’t well researched, Perspective handles its techno thriller and romance aspects more or less equally well, making it a surprisingly unique read amongst early hanfics.
