A lot of the stories written for my Boomerang challenge flew under the radar, for whatever reason, and Changing the Mirage may have flown even more under the radar than the others. That’s a real shame, because it’s a sweet, if brief, little romance unlike most of what hanfic has to offer.
Changing the Mirage is a college AU, something I love, and it makes great use of that setting. Taylor is new to town, new to this college and new to being totally open about his sexuality. Luckily, it doesn’t take long for him to set off a few gaydars, and he soon has a set of sitcom quality new friends, including one Shane McKenna.
Despite Taylor’s reluctance, based on a few bad past experiences that I wish were mentioned more, he quickly begins a relationship with Shane. They hit a few bumps along the way, mostly based on Taylor’s hangups from his past, but Shane has a few hangups of his own, as well. Taylor’s family are great secondary characters, and there’s a surprisingly little twist with his female best friend.
Ultimately, the drama here is all romantic. Changing the Mirage is a smart, sexy little romcom, but unlike most hanfic romcoms, the main couple consists of two men. It’s a refreshing change that ought to have made this story far more popular than it is.
