I found myself actually looking forward to this story, mostly due to the cliffhanger at the end of the previous one. Unfortunately, that was resolved within the first chapter, highlighting my problem with this whole trilogy. The really interesting plots get shoved aside so quickly, and the melodrama reigns.
Kerry’s writing seems to have improved some by this story. The confusion I had with her dialogue is lessened, although it still crops up occasionally. My biggest issue with her writing now is that there isn’t quite enough differentiation between each narrator’s voice. The newest one, Alice, has a fairly unique voice, but sometimes I can’t tell the others apart.
Aside from that disappearing cliffhanger at the beginning, I really admire her plotting in this story. Things that were hinted at in the second, and even the first, story grow into huge plot points in the third. While that could be repetitive, it really isn’t here. My only complaint is the way that some important scenes happen “off screen,” which does make them a surprise, but also sometimes makes them confusing. Conversely, some scenes get rehashed from multiple points of view, and that does feel repetitive.
One thing that does impress me about this trilogy is the obvious thought Kerry has put into them — right down to how well the titles fit together. Then you throw in the fact that she wrote all three in just four months. It’s pretty impressive, but I think that speed is part of the reason for many of the trilogy’s issues. If she had stuck to the rewriting, I think they could have been really good. As it is, I would much sooner recommend her newer trilogy.
