It takes a strong constitution to tackle one of Aimster’s stories. I fully admit that I don’t possess one of those, but I do possess the sort of curiosity that is fatal to felines. So when she announced a new story that would feature all three brothers prominently, I couldn’t resist giving it a chance.
Brothers Keepers does indeed let all three brothers shine. Taylor, as usual, is her victim, but this time Isaac gets in on the fun, too. Although left behind in a way, the only one not taken by the kidnappers, Zac shines just as much in his role as protector and savior. His relationship with Natalie is surprisingly sweet, if understated. Taylor and Isaac’s relationship is in the forefront, though, and their deep connection is evident as they see each other through their rough treatment at the kidnappers’ hands.
I’m often a broken record when reviewing Aimster’s fics, as I tend to find her shorter chapters a bit off putting. That’s not the case here; Brothers Keepers has lengthy chapters filled with details and plot threads woven through multiple short scenes that show a full day in the boys’ ordeal. To my frustration, many of these threads are left dangling after the ordeal seems to be over. I say seems, because I can’t quite tell if she intended to leave us wondering, hanging on so many unanswered questions, or if a sequel might be in the works. Either way, I think Brothers Keepers stands up on its own, and it certainly keep me on the edge of my seat for the week it took to read it. But I wouldn’t say no to a sequel!
