Status Completed (fourth in The Story In Your Eyes Series)

I have spent the majority of my time reading The Story In Your Eyes hoping that Taylor Quest would deviate from the pattern he has established of having a fake out ending wherein it is revealed that the majority of the story wasn’t real. I got my wish this time, in a way. Memories… of a Forgotten Past actually negates nearly the entire series up to this point.

We learn quickly at the beginning that this is an X-Files crossover. The memory erasure device is introduced in Dana Mulder’s case log. Yes, you read that right; I am not sure if the authors were confused or trying to establish that Mulder and Scully were “real” in this universe by changing their names. Given the introduction of characters obviously named after other hanfic authors, I’d say it was the latter, but it comes off as confusing rather than clever.

Speaking of confusing, that’s a good way to describe Memories… of a Forgotten Past. There are multiple point of view switches and flashbacks, and with nothing to denote when that is happening, it all results in a bit of mental whiplash. Eventually, it gets a little bit easier to follow and the plot more engaging, if never really exciting or surprising.

It still feels like a few loose ends haven’t been tied up successfully by the end, and I’m less than thrilled by the new character, a girl band member for Zac to date. Their relationship is nowhere near as interesting as Taylor and Will’s, and it makes far less sense that the record label would want to keep them apart. While I’m not at all interested in her continued inclusion in this series, I can only hope that the reset Taylor and Melody gave the series in Memories… of a Forgotten Past will allow the subsequent stories to be more unique.
