Even with the return of his coauthor, Melody Blake, Taylor Quest gets up to a lot of his old tricks in this sixth installment in the series. If you’re looking for over the top, horribly written female characters and so many conspiracies and plots it will make your head spin, then Journey Into Oblivion may just be the fic for you.

I will, however, give Taylor and Melody some credit. This is the smuttiest installment in the series by far. Unfortunately, little to none of the smut is between the only two characters I particularly like, and the rest involves a variety of celebrities I have no interest in. There is also some lesbian action, mostly just hinted at off screen, but the characters are written so terribly that this isn’t a plus by any means.

In fact, there are hardly any non-evil female characters to be seen at all, and I don’t think the similarity of two in particular to certain real people is a coincidence at all. There was a reason for that bad feeling I had at the end of the previous story; Taylor is not subtle at all in his portrayal of Taylor’s shotgun wedding, turning what could be interesting and angsty into a ridiculously convoluted conspiracy.

Since the story’s final chapters aren’t available, none of this is resolved. Based on how absurd the rest of the story was, though, I can’t imagine any way that Journey Into Oblivion could have ended that wouldn’t have been overwrought and tedious. It’s a shame that a series with so much potential never managed to live up to any of it, but it’s especially a shame that it devolved into such a catty parody of reality.
