The author makes a big deal out of how Everything Changes, she says, is nothing like other hanfics out there. What that really means is that it isn’t a romance. I have no problems with that; there are plenty of great stories to be told that don’t involve romance. What this means in practice, though, is that Everything Changes has little to no plot at all.
The story’s main characters, aside from Hanson, are a set of triplets–two girls and one boy–who just so happen to be best friends with Hanson and talented singers in their own right. At least, I assume they are, as they are asked to open for Hanson’s tour, although the scenes on tour hardly mention that the triplets are ostensibly there to work, not just to hang out with their friends.
Finally, a seemingly random plot thread results in some highly medically improbable action. It wouldn’t be so laughably bad if the emotional reactions seemed realistic, but as it is, I’m left with a really bad taste in my mouth, especially when Hanson begin to mock the concerned letters their fans send in after their near murder.
Mostly, Everything Changes is less of a story and more of a vehicle for the random, unconnected little jokes that Kitten wants to tell. Her writing is occasionally quite good, even if her characters don’t sound like teenagers at all, but the lack of anything resembling a decent plot makes it even more ridiculous that she insists this story is like no other hanfic. Perhaps that was true at the time, but even then, I think you could find much better non-romance fic to read.
