There are certain authors who have clear favorite tropes, and if those aren’t your favorite tropes, there’s no point in reading those particular authors. I had hoped that bringing in a co-author would make Beth’s writing more palatable for me, but sadly, it does not.

We learn quickly that the main character, unfortunately named Beth as well, fell victim to a Zac Hanson who is absolutely nothing like the real thing and had his child out of wedlock. Just reading the first chapter makes me cringe; this is not Zac. Authors are of course allowed to take creative license with their characters, but when they turn Hanson into unbelievable, nonredeemable assholes who somehow still manage to win over the female characters, that’s crossing a line for me.

This is clearly some sort of strange kink for Beth and Alicia, as they do the exact same to Nick Jonas. The only male character here who doesn’t receive that treatment is Joe, but that’s hardly enough to make up for all of the rest of the terrible behavior exhibited here. Even Beth isn’t much better; she makes no attempt at all to let Nick know they have a daughter, yet she is still angry with him for not being in the child’s life.

It all culminates in a kidnapping scene with a female accomplice that’s far too similar to another story of Beth’s and which has no emotional impact for me at all. Perhaps if Zac’s character had returned, I would have felt differently about the end of My Little Decoy. Although he does play a large role at first, by the end this is nothing more than a Jonas Brothers fanfic. I suppose if you like the JoBros and don’t mind coercion and rape, you’ll find something to like in this story, but for me there’s nothing.
