Seeing Beyond Fame is a difficult to define story; it’s hard to even think of a genre to list, given that not a lot happens in these deceptively long chapters. In fact, the story seems to mostly exist as a vehicle for Rebekah and Katie to try to prove they are better than other fans, especially those who fawn and scream and dream of dating Hanson.

For loosely explained reasons, Hanson chose to spend a few days during their tour staying with a fan–namely, Katie. It’s clear that all the characters in the story are based one hundred percent on the two authors, their families, friends and even enemies. While I’ve seen that done to almost charming effect before by clearly young authors, Rebekah and Katie just come off as very judgmental. It doesn’t help that there are moments of racism and homophobia in the story, either. These are mostly very subtle, but it seems to be part of a larger pattern.

There are also a few mocking mentions of another “Internet Hanson story” where Taylor finds out he has a twin sister. Given how little of consequence happens in Seeing Beyond Fame and how smug the authors clearly are about creating a story where the characters really, truly just want to be Hanson’s friends, I think that other story sounds like a more interesting read.
