Pairings Taylor/Eminem
Length 10 chapters
Status Unfinished
Ahestele may seem like a one trick pony, given that she’s best known for her Taylor/Eminem thing. She’s practically the Aspen of that particular pairing. However, she’s also a master of alternate universes, and Nearer To Thee is a great read for those who might find the whole figure skating thing in her more well known fic a bit off-putting.
The story is written entirely from Eminem–or rather, Marshall’s–point of view, and although it’s third person, it’s a close third person that allows Ahestele to pepper the story with his dialect. There are times when it gets to be a bit much, but I do think this version of Marshall, a cop who is still connected to the streets he grew up on while also being dedicated to his job as a homicide detective, is very interesting.
What’s even more interesting is how Taylor’s past and strange psychic ability play into the series of murders Marshall has been working to solve. There are still pieces of his tragic story left untold, just as the murderer remains uncaught. Ahestele has thrown in a few interesting twists and turns, but she stopped writing at a point when it’s pretty clear who the murderer is. Still, I’m dying for more of the mystery and more of Taylor and Marshall’s awkward yet electric chemistry. Even if you’re not an Eminem fan–I’m not–there’s plenty in Nearer To Thee to get interested in, as long as you’re not expecting any sort of resolution.
