It’s difficult to tell a complete story in just a few chapters. Nat clearly took that as a challenge with Echoes of My Life, but her writing is always strong and so it’s no surprise she is able to accomplish that challenge with ease.
Each chapter in this brief fic is a picture of a moment in one month of Taylor’s life. Through these glimpses, we quickly learn that his marriage is on the rocks. Natalie is uncomfortable with the fans, which is understandable, but the way she and Taylor deal with each other is less easy to understand.
When the marriage finally ends, he assures his new friend Kayla that it was simply because the two of them were not good for each other, but this isn’t entirely supported by the narrative.
Natalie’s belief that Taylor is cheating on her with Kayla is, however, supported by the narrative. It’s very easy to see how she could think that, even though she couldn’t have seen the bits of their growing chemistry that Nat shows in each chapter. It isn’t surprising that, even though it wasn’t truly an affair, they begin a relationship shortly after the divorce. I would, however, like to see even more of their chemistry and banter. Nat may have told a complete story here, but I wouldn’t have complained at all if Echoes of My Life had been just a little bit longer.
